Accent français

Last Friday I came back from a 10 day road trip driving from San Francisco to Seattle, and coming back with the Amtrak Coast Starlight train – as I mentioned earlier.

I used Foursquare a bit more than usual (about 50 checkings over 10 days) and took a lot of pictures of rocks, landscapes, forests, the ocean, etc.
I started making a simple mashups to visualize the overall itinerary I ended up doing.

Some highlights:

• 1990 miles / 3200 km driven from SF to Seattle in 8 days.
• Very nice weather except the day I drived through Crater Lake, which I could not see at all because of the fog.
• Not many tourists or anyone on the roads end of October.
• I loved all the coastal areas, and especially the Olympic National Park.
• I ended up staying in campgrounds most of the nights, in the middle of a forest or close to the ocean, with barely anyone around. That was awesome.
• It’s not easy to find the cheap / non-RV campgrounds where you can put a tent or just sleep in the car.
• All the roads were surprisingly well maintained (I’m too used to the bad roads of south SF).
• I really liked the cities of Bend and Portland in Oregon. Seattle, WA… not as much but that was at the end of my trip. Redding, CA was weird.
• I think I expected a bit more from the train trip (23 hours from Seattle to San Francisco). That was really comfortable but as I was into a good book, and we were going through areas I had driven across, I did not pay much attention to the landscape.

What a nice coincidence: One year that this blog had not seen any fresh and spirited content. No longer! I have reclaimed a bit of my freedom by leaving my job at Nokia a week ago, and I’m now in a position that I can do whatever I like. What should that be, you ask me? A bit of traveling (the US is big, Europe is far), a bit of hacking here and there, and massive amount of meditation in a remote desert (I’m kidding).
It’s been a long time that I have not had a longer break than 3 weeks of vacation (I know that it’s forever for many here), and I’m really looking forward to getting bored. But then again, if you live in the Bay Area and you get bored, you’re not doing it right.

I’m actually leaving on a 10 day road trip tomorrow morning. I’ll be driving up along the coast of Northern California to Eureka, east towards Lassen Park and Mt Shasta, north again in Oregon territory, zigzagging among the forest park lands to Portland, Bend, then to Seattle. A good friend helped me make the plan, arguing among other things for the mandatory sight of large amount of solidified lava.

I then drop the rental in Seattle, and take the Coast Starlight train (wifi included, thank you Amtrak) all the way down to the Bay Area in one stretch of 22 hours.

A priori, mes résolutions pour cette année n’incluent pas de bloguer plus. Alors voyons voir, depuis Novembre dernier… Et bien, si plusieurs petites choses:

Je suis allée début Décembre en Belgique pour donner un tutoriel sur Python For S60. J’ai passé les 3-4 jours juste avant à créer le-dit tutoriel. De toute façon il pleuvait, j’avais pas besoin de voir plus que la fenêtre de la chambre d’hotel. J’ai aussi mis le tutorial sur un site web, histoire de. Tout est ici, en Anglais par contre: http://www.girlcoder.com. J’avais un nom de domaine qui trainait – résultat d’une de ces nuits où, ne dormant pas et rêvant d’un site, je me lève et me dis qu’il faut que je prenne le nom de domaine. Donc, ca s’appelle girlcoder.com, mais c’est pas que pour les filles.

Juste après le tutoriel, j’ai pu faire une petite visite à Orléans et visiter toute ou presque la famille. J’ai aussi appris une bonne chose: Si vous voulez récupérer un billet de TGV d’un pays autre que la France, ne réservez pas le billet sur la SNCF.

Mi-décembre, mon ami A. arrivait à San Francisco pour 2 semaines. On est descendu en voiture jusqu’à San Diego pour 2 jours (où on a visité le zoo entre autres choses), puis pris l’avion le 25 Déc de SD pour Cancún, au Mexique. Retour le 1er Janvier.
Ah les vancances de fin d’année au soleil, au Mexique. C’est assez extraordinaire. J’étais d’abord surprise des types de touristes là-bas. Cancùn, c’est connu ici pour être la destination des étudiants pendant leur Spring-break. Ils vont là-bas, se dechainent et font la fête pendant une semaine. En Décembre, qui est la haute saison touristique, c’est plutôt beaucoup de familles, des couples, et des groupes d’amis. Aussi, il y a beaucoup d’hispanophones, et c’est une destination touristique importante pour les Méxicains. Beaucoup d’Américains, normal aussi.

On avait un package qui incluait une voiture de location. Arrivés là-bas, Hertz n’avait pas de voitures en réserve. On s’en est tiré en louant 2 jours une voiture à une agence de location locale, et on a ainsi pu visiter Valladolid, Chichen-Itza, et Playa-Del-Carmen et Tulum. On a visité Isla Mujeres, le centre de Cancún et plusieurs des plages de la zone des hotels. On est bien entendu sortis pas mal. Notre hotel -Le Flamenco- est pas très loin du centre ville de la zone des hotels, bien pourvue en restos, bars, clubs. On a passé le réveillon dans un resto mexicain, Le Perico. Excellentes vacances, et reposantes – on en avait besoin.

Comme je retourne bientôt au Mexique, à Orizaba, je me suis mise sérieusement à l’espagnol. Ce sera ma première résolution de l’année. Feliz año nuevo!

Quick update, comme on dit ici.

Coté boulot, on en a plein notre assiette (comme on dit ici). On espère débuter un déploiement test avec des étudiants de Stanford de notre application. On a ajouté quelques fonctionnalités qui prennent du temps à programmer. Mais si tout va bien, la semaine prochaine, on devrait commencer à donner des téléphones avec l’application.
J’ai décidé jeudi dernier d’envoyer quelques dossiers de PhD. Ce qui veut dire que j’ai 15 jours pour préparer le GRE et le TOEFL – enfin maintenant il me reste 8 jours. Ca va être sacrément tendu. J’ingurgite des listes de vocabulaires. Le format des deux tests a changé depuis que je les ai passés. Et forcément, comme je m’y prends sur le tard, tous les centres dans la région sont bookés. Je passe le GRE vendredi prochain, à Fresno (3h30 d’ici), puis Samedi le TOEFL (à 3h30 de Fresno).
Si je rentre pas trop soulée de tout ca, j’irai voir ce groupe (Breathe Carolina, écoutez Gossip, Lovely) dans un petit patelin (à 1h30 de route).

Je donne aussi un tutorial en Belgique sur Python For S60 le 2 Décembre, pour lequel j’ai quelques préparations à faire. Après ca, une semaine en France. J’en profiterai pour préparer mes dossiers de PhD.
